How to Change Your Address in Delhi After Moving: The Complete 2026 Checklist

You've shifted homes — now make sure the paperwork follows you. Here's exactly where to update your address in Delhi, the documents you'll need, and the official links to do each one.

Moving into a new home in Delhi is a big job — and once the boxes are unpacked, there's a second, quieter task most people forget until something goes wrong: updating your address everywhere it's officially recorded. A gas cylinder that can't be delivered, a cheque book sent to your old flat, or a missed government letter are all avoidable with a couple of focused hours.

This guide walks through every place that matters, in the order we'd tackle them, with the documents you'll need and the official portal for each. Bookmark it and tick things off as you go.

First, keep one set of address proofs ready

Almost every update asks for the same proof of address. Keep digital scans of two or three of these handy: your new rent agreement or sale deed, a recent electricity or water bill in your name, a bank statement/passbook, or your updated Aadhaar. Update Aadhaar first — it makes every other step easier.

01Aadhaar

Update Aadhaar first, because most other services accept it as instant address proof. You can change your address online through the myAadhaar portal by logging in with your Aadhaar number and OTP, then uploading a valid proof of address. If your name on the proof doesn't match, or you don't have a document in your name, you can visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra in person. A small update fee usually applies, and the change typically reflects within a few days.

02Bank accounts & cards

Update each bank where you hold an account so statements, debit/credit cards and cheque books reach the right place. Most banks let you change your address through net banking or the mobile app (look under Profile → Update Address) if your Aadhaar is linked; otherwise submit a short request form with address proof at your branch. Don't forget any credit cards from a different issuer — those are separate.

03LPG gas connection

This one trips people up. If you've moved within the same area, you usually only need to update your address with your existing distributor through the provider's app or website (Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas). If you've moved to a different locality or city, you'll typically need to transfer the connection — surrender it at the old distributor and re-establish it at the one serving your new address, carrying your subscription voucher and a new address proof.

04Electricity & water

If the new connection isn't already in your name, apply for a name/ownership transfer with your DISCOM — in Delhi that's usually BSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna, or Tata Power-DDL depending on your area — and with the Delhi Jal Board for water. You'll need the previous bill, your address proof, and the sale deed or rent agreement.

05Voter ID (electoral roll)

To shift your vote to your new constituency, file Form 8 (shifting of residence) on the Voters' Service Portal. This keeps your Voter ID number the same and simply updates the address and polling booth.

06Driving licence & vehicle RC

Both are handled through the Parivahan portal. Use Sarathi for your driving licence address change and Vahan for your vehicle's Registration Certificate. If you've moved between RTO jurisdictions, the RC update is more involved (it may need a No-Objection Certificate), so start this one early.

07Passport

A passport address change is done as a re-issue application on the Passport Seva portal. It's not urgent for daily life, but worth doing before you next need police verification at a new address.

08Everything else (the easy-to-forget list)

These don't need government forms, but missing them causes the most day-to-day annoyance:

  • Employer & HR records — for payslips, PF and insurance correspondence.
  • Insurance policies — health, vehicle and life insurers.
  • Children's school — records and transport routes.
  • Online shopping & food apps — set the new address as default to avoid deliveries to the old flat.
  • Subscriptions & magazines, broadband/DTH, and any society or RWA records.
  • Post office — you can request mail redirection so anything sent to your old address is forwarded for a set period while you finish the rest.

A quick note

Government processes, forms and fees change from time to time. We've linked the official portals for each step — always confirm the current requirement there before you start. When in doubt, your updated Aadhaar plus a recent utility bill covers most situations.

10Make the move itself the easy part

Updating your address is far less stressful when the move itself went smoothly — nothing lost, nothing damaged, everything where it should be. That's the part we handle. We've been managing home shifting and office relocations across Delhi since 1994, and you can see real 2026 cost ranges here or read our 10-point checklist for choosing a mover before you book anyone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most important address to update first?

Aadhaar. Once your Aadhaar shows the new address, most banks, telecom providers and government services will accept it as instant proof, which speeds up every other update.

Do I need to transfer my gas connection if I move within Delhi?

If you stay within the same distributor's service area, you usually only update your address. If your new home falls under a different distributor — common when moving across the city — you'll generally transfer the connection rather than just edit the address.

Can I change my voter ID address without losing my old registration?

Yes. Filing Form 8 (shifting of residence) on the Voters' Service Portal updates your existing record to the new constituency — your Voter ID number stays the same.

How long should I keep post-office mail redirection active?

A month or two is usually enough to catch anything from services you forgot to update. Treat any redirected letter as a reminder to update that sender directly.

Do you help with the address paperwork?

We focus on the physical move — packing, transport and safe delivery — but we're always happy to point our customers in the right direction. This guide covers the official steps; for the move itself, just call us.
